Drunk Driver Crashes Stolen Truck Into SUV, Flees on Foot Before Arrest [Spotsylvania]
A Saturday afternoon crash in Spotsylvania County has resulted in a Fredericksburg man facing a long list of serious charges after witnesses say he drove a stolen pickup truck erratically into another vehicle, fled the scene on foot, and then assaulted a deputy while being taken into custody.
What Happened
On Saturday, April 11, Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a crash at the intersection of Patriot Highway (U.S. 1) and Mills Drive. Witnesses reported seeing a blue Chevrolet Colorado being driven erratically moments before it struck a gray Chevrolet SUV. The collision sent both vehicles off the road and down an embankment into a wooded, swampy area.
The pickup driver abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot before deputies arrived. A bystander tracked the suspect to a nearby restaurant parking lot, where sheriff’s deputies located 27-year-old Deon Tyrell McKenney of Fredericksburg. He was barefoot, visibly injured, and showing clear signs of intoxication, according to the sheriff’s office. A witness at the scene positively identified McKenney as the driver who had fled.
McKenney denied any involvement in the crash, gave inconsistent statements to deputies, and refused field sobriety testing and a breathalyzer. When taken into custody, he threatened deputies and kicked one of them during the arrest. A shoe recovered near the arrest scene matched another found inside the wrecked pickup. His cell phone was also recovered from the truck and taken into evidence.
The next day, a Spotsylvania resident reported their blue Chevrolet Colorado stolen from the 4300 block of Turriff Lane — confirming the truck had been taken after the owner left it unlocked with the keys inside. Investigators determined it was the same vehicle involved in the Saturday crash. A motor vehicle theft warrant was obtained against McKenney.
He was charged with DUI (second offense within five years), unreasonable refusal of a breath test (second offense), hit-and-run, reckless driving, failure to maintain lane, driving while revoked, assault on law enforcement, obstruction of justice, and motor vehicle theft. McKenney was held without bond at Rappahannock Regional Jail and appeared in Spotsylvania General District Court on Monday morning.
What This Crash Means for the Other Driver
When a driver who is drunk, revoked, and operating a stolen vehicle causes a crash and flees the scene, the victim faces a deeply frustrating situation. The at-fault driver may carry no valid insurance. Their prior DUI history and revoked license status are factors that can affect how compensation is pursued — and the complexity of these cases makes legal guidance essential from the start.
In Virginia, victims of crashes caused by impaired drivers may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, property damage, lost wages, and pain and suffering. When criminal charges are also involved, as they are here, evidence gathered during the criminal investigation can become important to a civil claim as well. Acting quickly to preserve that evidence and understand your options matters.
