Three Killed in Fatal Car Crash on Lewiston Road [Spotsylvania County]
Three young men with futures ahead of them — all seniors at Spotsylvania High School — lost their lives in a single-vehicle car accident in Spotsylvania County late Friday night, March 27, 2026. The crash has shaken the local community deeply, coming just months before the students were scheduled to graduate.
What Happened
Shortly before midnight on March 27, Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s deputies and fire and rescue personnel responded to a crash in the 5300 block of Lewiston Road. When first responders arrived, they found a single vehicle — a 2002 Mercedes coupe — that had left the right side of the road and struck a tree. All three occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
The victims were two 17-year-olds and an 18-year-old, all seniors at Spotsylvania High School who had been preparing to graduate in May. One of the victims has since been publicly identified as 17-year-old Kyle Derby, whose family said he was the driver and that the other two were his childhood best friends.
The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit, along with the Virginia Department of Transportation, responded to the scene and launched a formal investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that speed may have been a contributing factor. The investigation remains ongoing. Spotsylvania County Schools issued a statement to families and confirmed that additional counseling staff would be available when students return from spring break on April 6.
Understanding Your Legal Rights After a Fatal Car Crash in Virginia
When a car accident results in death, Virginia law provides important legal protections for surviving family members. These situations are as legally complex as they are emotionally painful, and understanding your rights is a critical first step.
In Virginia, wrongful death claims allow the families of those killed due to another party’s negligence to seek compensation for losses that include funeral and burial expenses, lost future income, and the profound loss of companionship and guidance. Establishing negligence — whether through excessive speed, reckless driving, or other contributing factors — is central to these claims, and the details of the investigation can significantly affect the outcome.
Even in single-vehicle accidents, questions of liability are not always straightforward. Road conditions, vehicle maintenance, and the circumstances surrounding the crash all require careful review. Virginia requires minimum liability insurance coverage on all vehicles, but insurance companies routinely work to limit what they pay out to grieving families. Our wrongful death attorneys understand how these cases are built and how to make sure families aren’t left without the support they deserve.
